Hey ,
It felt like just yesterday when the Knicks won the NBA Championship and New York quite literally had the best and most unified summer in a while. A core memory that so many of us will speak about for years to come.
But we’re already heading into a brand new season and with that comes so many changes, even for the reigning champs. No roster stays the same forever, but I’m sending out a lifeline of hope that the core starters are here to stay. They have a best friends forever chemistry that I really love and it’ll be tested right away by the Philadelphia 76ers, who are one to lookout for this season. They’ve added two phenomenal players, Jaylen Brown and the one and only, LeBron James to a core of VJ, Maxey and Embiid.
I, for some unknown, unaffiliated reason, always seem to have a sweet spot for Philly sports teams. VJ Edgecombe, who is no longer a rookie, really captured my attention last year when he got drafted. He comes from a small 7-mile island in the Bahamas called Bimini, and he’s a true representation that small town dreams can take you all the way to a big city.
But the story I keep coming back to revolves around the veterans, who have been in the league for a long time but are technically “rookies” to Philadelphia. Starting over and learning a new team’s dynamic can’t be easy, but I do think it’s one of the bravest things someone can do. Being established somewhere doesn’t mean you should get comfortable and entering a new chapter doesn’t erase the old one. It just means there’s a new opportunity to grow.
As scary as it is, I think there’s a certain level of freedom that comes with starting over again. It’s an inevitable part of life, whether it’s a new job, a new city, a new relationship, a new chapter like marriage or kids, or even a new version of yourself, since we’re always evolving and growing with experience.
So as the Sixers figure out their new chemistry, I’ll be watching with a little extra respect for what it takes to begin again. You’re allowed to feel like a rookie again. Being new somewhere doesn’t cancel out everything you’ve already built.
And the bite-size lesson i’m taking from this is you can be great and also still be a beginner, those two things aren’t opposites.
