athletes are art

depth and compassion fill spaces that indifference never could. the new york city marathon is proof of that.

Having depth means you notice everything. You feel things most people don’t. You think about meaning and intention when others have already moved on. And it can be really exhausting to live with that kind of sensitivity in a world that rewards indifference.

There were times throughout my life that I thought having depth was a curse, but overtime, you realize it’s just more density and sometimes we’re just learning how to carry it well. It can be heavy because it’s real. It’s the part of you that makes ordinary moments feel really special, turns heartbreak into deeper empathy instead of revenge, and turns your creativity into something people feel rather than just observe.

Having depth means you don’t just doomscroll through life, you dive, latch onto memories and you explore the hard and complex parts in your story that most people dismiss. And yes, sometimes that hurts, but it’s also part of the reason you are who you are today.

And I see this same depth in sports. Everything feels so interconnected. You find out someone you know roots for the same team as you, and suddenly you’re sharing the same joy or heartbreak, something that comes so naturally in both life and in the game.

This week is New York City Marathon week, one of my favorite times of the year, when people come together and cheer each other past their own limits. It’s a reminder that professional sports are fun to watch, but what’s just as beautiful is seeing a community show up for the everyday person.

Aside from it being a major accomplishment, completing a marathon is both emotionally and physically taxing. It warms my heart every year and reminds me that all athletes are art. I’ve always had a deep admiration for their work ethic, and how strong their mindset has to be in order to even accomplish something this big.
